Please join us for our next installment of Cocktails & Conversations hosted by Turner Construction and HOK.

Turner Construction has had a presence in Kansas City since 1944, and a permanent office since 1988.  Prior to relocating to their new building, Turner’s space consisted of 28 enclosed offices which hindered collaboration and made communication difficult.  In an effort to reenergize Turner’s culture and allow them to recruit in a competitive market, visual and physical connectivity became a primary driver for their new space.  Programmatic pieces were organized to create wide open space and materials were selected to connect the Turner brand and its history to this new office and its bright future.

Turner partnered with HOK to design and transformed their office experience from a compartmentalized environment to an innovative, collaborative and open office to do meaningful work.  Their new space embraces their company’s lean values, reducing personal square footage while providing more amenities to promote casual, spontaneous connections.

Collaboration is further encouraged through a large, combined open conference and café space.  The bright and airy open office includes multiple huddle and collaboration spaces that have a variety of seating and technology to encourage purposeful interaction between staff.  Planned along the exterior curved wall, the open office maximizes daylight and exterior views for all employees and full glass fronts on the few private offices increase visibility, transparency and interaction between all-staff.

To further celebrate Turner’s passion for construction, materials typically used in the built environment, but generally hidden, such as plywood, the concrete sub-floor, structure and HVAC equipment were celebrated through a playful, modern design.  Patterned V-routed Baltic birch plywood panels communicate movement and activity in the entry and central conference room.  This active connection is also present in the carpet, upholstery and bright reveals of color in the conferences and copy niche.
