Virtual Nooniversity: Lost and Found - Alvar Aalto

12:00 PM
Zoom Virtual Meeting | Online Kansas City, MO 64108 Map

This will be a VIRTUAL program held on Zoom.  Log in information will be emailed to attendees two days before the program.

Join Kirk Gastinger, FAIA who will present this program about architect Alvar Aalto.

Alvar Aalto designed three building projects in the United States. The dormitories for MIT [Baker House-1947], Mount Angel Abbey Library [Oregon-1963] were built. The third project was an addition/renovation to the Finnish Lutheran Church, Brooklyn New York - 1947. The design was not built for budgetary reasons, and the plans were 'lost' according to all Aalto historians. In 2018, 71 years later, the 'lost' plan was 'found' in the pastor's papers after his death. Two blueprints of a design for the 'destroyed by fire' facade were carefully conserved and cleaned revealing an Aalto design that emphasized his commitment to community, the environment and the emerging modern architecture of the post-war world. Architectural history can now add a footnote to Aalto's oeuvre revealing his unique view of green design.

This program is worth 1 LU.  You must attend the full session in order to get AIA credit.  If you leave the Zoom meeting early, no credit will be reported.
