Design U. 2022 will equip you with the key concepts and strategies to build your competence and your confidence as you navigate your career.  A three-part series for early career professionals, Design U.  is organized around the ‘trifecta’ of lifelong career success in architecture – career design, project team design, and firm design.  Jane Walton, business consultant, author, speaker and thinker shares her insights from working with architecture firms around the country for the past twenty years. She’ll introduce stories of successes and common pitfalls to avoid so you can manage your career with aplomb. These are three sessions you won’t want to miss! Sessions build on each other so attendance at all three is encouraged.

Session 1: Designing Your Career | August 24, 2022

Designing a successful career is about discovering where you fit best. This includes the work you do, why you do it, where you do it, how you do it, and what you uniquely bring to a firm. We’ll explore these dynamics through the lens of Fit, Feel and Function.

  • Fit - Firm focus and structure
  • Feel - A cultural fit
  • Function - Where you best contribute

Session 2: Designing a Dynamic Project Team | September 29, 2022

Your experience with a project team can either feel satisfying or draining. Dynamic project teams don’t just happen, they are carefully organized, curated and managed. Learn how to design a dynamic project team by focusing on Clarity, Contribution and Collaboration.

  •  Clarity - defining parameters
  • Contribution - leveraging voices, knowledge & skills
  • Collaboration - utilizing tools that encourage participation

Session 3: The Design of a Successful Architecture Firm | November 1, 2022

To appreciate the world of architecture is to understand the dynamics of a successful firm. Practitioners must understand the business first, and then balance the tension between unbridled creative passion with the realities of the bottom line.

  • Clients - understanding individual client needs
  • Competition - standing out from the rest
  • Capabilities - assembling and managing a successful team

Jane thinks business can be better designed. All too often business practices are overcomplicated or disorganized causing teams unnecessary confusion and fatigue. Whether it be through her books, blogs, podcasts, speaking engagements or one-on-one insights, Jane brings creative solutions to everyday issues—allowing people to think about their business differently.
