The Kansas City Star | World’s designs come to the Nelson-Atkins

Last fall, at a small auction in Paris, Keith Davis, the Nelson-Atkins Museum’s head of photography, spotted what he called a “gorgeous, great image” of the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle. The photo showed booths laden with decorative objects and interspersed with cozy seating.

It was a serendipitous find given that other members of the Nelson staff were deep in preparations for a sprawling new exhibit, “Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs,” which opens April 14.

The exhibit is the biggest project the museum has tackled since the opening of the Bloch Building in 2007, museum staffers say.

“We knew very well of the upcoming show,” said Davis, who placed the winning bid on British photographer Charles Thurston Thompson’s albumen print, “World’s Fair French Department, 1855.”

AIA East Bay presents the video: IDP & ARE–Weathering the Storm

Let’s face it; getting an architectural license is hard. There’s paperwork, bureaucracy, expenses, time–all in addition to studying and proving that you have the right stuff to be an architect.

On Tuesday, March 20th, the Emerging Professionals Group and the Young Architects Forum hosted a panel discussion on the licensure process. This video highlights how seven recently licensed architects (and one soon to be) made it through the storm (relatively) unscathed. These panelists answer questions regarding everything from study strategies and resources to logging IDP hours and the benefits of having a license.

The Kansas City Star | Sacred buildings dot the Kansas landscape

Like sentinels, many of these sacred buildings rise towering on the Kansas plains; others in the state are barely noticeable among trees and suburban sprawl.

Regardless of their setting, these temples, churches and cathedrals are testaments to faith and service to God.

Many were built with the blood, sweat and sacrifice of our ancestors.

The following sacred places are considered some of the more historically and architecturally significant in Kansas.

ARCHITECT | Art Institute hires assistant curator of architecture and design

The Chicago Tribune’s Blair Kamin reports that the Art Institute of Chicago has hired Karen Kice as its assistant curator of architecture and design. Kice, a researcher and curator who received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, joins architecture and design curator Zoë Ryan. “We are delighted to have Karen join us here at the Art Institute,” Ryan says. “Having worked most recently in Los Angeles, and before that in New York, Karen has participated in the research and initiatives at the forefront of contemporary urban studies. This is a field of utmost significance, encompassing not only architecture but also social and political economies, community engagement, and innovative solutions to today’s issues.”
