These training sessions are supported, in whole or in part, by the Department of Energy – Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under Grant Award Number DE-EE0000758 from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program made available pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will consist of a series of workshops that will demonstrate practical approaches to applying the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and 2012 International Residential Code (IRC) energy provisions in constructing or renovating residential and small commercial properties. These workshops will:
• Focus on specific sections of the new code to illustrate practical approaches to satisfy the code requirements as regards lighting, air sealing, insulation, ventilation, and windows;
• Emphasize in particular the requirements for residential and small commercial buildings;
• Demonstrate blower-door testing and other diagnostic tools, since the 2012 IECC makes testing a mandatory way of gauging building performance;
• Combine classroom teaching with “on-site” instruction, by taking participants on-site to construction projects in the Kansas City area that meet new code requirements as regards building materials, techniques and performance.

INSTRUCTORS

Jim van Eman, James van Eman Architects: a full service, general practice architectural firm providing design and consulting for green building, renovation, and historic preservation. Jim van Eman is a LEED Accredited Professional. Project design experience includes historic renovations, residential projects, educational and commercial projects; site planning and landscape designs.

Sharla Reiad, Hathmore Technologies LLC: a regional and national leader in energy conservation, renewable energy and environmental consulting. Hathmore Technologies runs the Accurate Rater Network, for training and certifying RESNET energy raters, and is a US Green Building Council LEED for Homes provider. Sharla Reiad is a building analyst, trainer, proctor and quality assurance analyst for the Building Performance Network, RESNET and LEED.

Donna Sanders, 106 Greenway: conducts energy audits and assessments for residential and commercial properties in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and holds energy auditing certifications from Building Performance Institute, RESNET, Home Performance with Energy Star and the Association of Energy Engineers.

The Masonry Institute of St Louis recently completed a relative cost study using MasonrySystems.org wall types and R.S. means cost data. This information could be helpful to architects, engineers and owners when considering budget estimates to make material system choices, or for determining overall project feasibility. Join Darrell McMillian, Technical Director Masonry Institute of St Louis, as he presents the results of the study per Kansas City construction, what lessons were learned during the process, and how the study might be applied to project design.

Faculty:
John Lape, AIA, FCSI, CCS, CSC is an architect licensed in 9 western states and owns a small architectural practice based in Portland, Oregon. He has been involved with CES since the pilot program in 1995 and is the point of contact for 3 providers including one component. This year he is chair of the national AIA Education Committee.

Alla Orlova, MA, Director, Continuing Education is responsible for the overall management of continuing education and professional learning. She serves as the key organizational and AIA policy advisor on mandatory continuing education issues within the AIA national component, working with state and local components, as well as other associations, and state licensing boards on continuing professional education. Alla explores emerging trends in continuing education content delivery including web-based models and distance learning. She oversees program quality, development, and administration of the AIA Member records and CES Provider services. In addition, Alla manages the work of the continuing education team.
