Welcome to the Urban Revolution: How Cities are Changing the World

ULI Kansas City, in partnership with UMKC Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design, presents guest speaker and author Jeb Brugmann

Brugmann’s book Welcome to the Urban Revolution: How Cities are Changing the World (2009,Bloomsbury Press) examines how cities are meeting the global challenges of the 21st Century. Taking readers on a street-level tour of the world’s cities, Urban Revolution provides an anatomy of our urbanizing planet and probes the foundation of globalization – an evolving world system of cities that incubates crises and revolutions, but also promises solutions for our greatest challenges.

Jeb Brugmann is a leading practitioner and thinker on strategy and the process of innovation. For 25 years he has been devising solutions to help local communities access the benefits of globalization, and to help global organizations engage in local communities and markets. His work focuses particularly on the critical contribution of innovation at the micro-level of the locality, business model, or consumer cluster to achieve macro-level strategy objectives.

As the founder and chief executive of major international organizations and programs, as a social entrepreneur and for-profit private sector entrepreneur, and as a corporate and urban strategy consultant, he has worked on the ground in scores of cities and rural regions in 28 countries. From 1990 to 2000 Brugmann served as founding CEO of ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability. Most recently, he served as Executive Director of ICLEI USA, which provides policy, education, and technical support to more than 600 U.S. city and county members. Through ICLEI and his private consulting practice, Brugmann has provided direct assistance to dozens of cities developing their own environmental sustainability plans.
