Spotlight on David Greusel, FAIA
2009 College of Fellows Elevation

AIA Kansas City member, David Greusel, with Populous was elevated to the American Institute of Architects’ College of Fellows today. He was one of 112 architects recognized for their contributions of national significance to the profession; Greusel was specifically recognized for his role in improving architects’ communication skills, sharing broadly with the profession in numerous seminars and publications.

Since 1998, Greusel has been a speaker at the AIA national convention on helping architects improve their communication skills with their clients and their staffs. Nearly every one of those years, his presentations have been rated as the best session of the convention.

In addition to speaking across the country, Greusel also has been a frequent author on the topic of architects’ communication skills. He authored the book Architect’s Essentials of Presentation Skills in 2002. He also wrote sections on communications skills in the books The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice and Professional Practice 101: Business Practices and Case Studies in Architecture.

All of Greusel’s work in educating the architectural community is in addition to his daily role as principal at HOK Sport Venue Event, where he has spent the past 13 years designing some of the nation’s most recognizable civic buildings. He has helped design such projects as the Grand River Center in Dubuque, Ia.; a renovation of the original Philip Johnson-designed Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Ill.; Minute Maid Park in Houston, Tex.; and PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Penn.

Fellows Committee

The College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.

Locally each year, this group facilitates and supports nominations of potential Fellows within AIA Kansas City, and hosts programs in honor of the newest fellow.
