Masonry Repair and Restoration of Early 20th Century Transitional Masonry Buildings
This presentation will focus on the performance issues associated with early 20th century masonry buildings and considerations for repairs. A historical overview of building design and detailing from that time period as well as a discussion of the associated material properties will provide the basis for understanding the types of problems that lead to visible deterioration. Particular attention will be paid to “transitional buildings”, which include mass masonry walls that contain embedded steel and veneer anchorage systems. Insight will be presented on ways in which these original building materials interact over time and the proper methodology for selecting proper repairs. Specific information will be provided on repair materials and techniques that are suitable for these types of buildings and their construction types.
