Join us for our next installment of Cocktails & Conversations hosted by SFS at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish Multi-Purpose Space/Narthex Addition.

St. Peter’s Catholic Parish was established on November 8, 1925 on the site of a cornfield in south Kansas City.  For the first few years, the Parish worshiped in a corrugated iron building fondly known as “the Tin Cathedral.”

Having quickly outgrown its humble worship space, the parish commissioned architect J.P. Dillon to design a new building comprising a church, school and convent in 1928. Constructed of native limestone in the style of modified English Gothic, it was completed in 1929 on what is now Meyer Boulevard between Holmes Road and Charlotte Street. In 1943, ground was broken for the present-day Church building prominently sited at the corner of Meyer Boulevard and Holmes. In December 1948, the church received an AIA KC design award for outstanding institutional architecture.

Though little work was done on the church itself, the school saw a variety of renovations over the years, including a large expansion and the addition of a new gymnasium in 1998 to the south of the original “North” school building.

In 2016, SFS was engaged to design a new Multipurpose Space and improve and update the school complex. Preserving the architectural integrity of the original design was paramount to the Parish, and great care was taken to conceive a design solution that respected the past and looked to the future.

Activating the underutilized gap between the historic school and church structures is the new 2,900 SF Multipurpose Space. Distinct in its simple language of SSG curtain wall, concrete columns, and timber roof structure, the addition is intended to be as transparent as possible and defer to and visually link the existing stone structures, providing new interior gathering space that serves students, educators, and parishioners alike.

Meanwhile, multiple past renovations and expansions to the 1929 school building left its interior disjointed and hard to navigate. A new stair addition, reflecting the design language of the Multipurpose Space and signifying its new primary entrance, was added at the east side of the school, dramatically simplifying circulation through the existing structure’s many different floor levels. Additional work focused on enhancing the learning environment with new lighting, updated technology, refreshed finishes, new MEP systems, improved life safety, and accessibility upgrades.
