APTCP: The Art and Craft of Dry-stack Stone Wall Construction

The team constructing the “Walking Wall” will discuss their process and techniques for building dry-stack stone walls. The Director of design and experience for the Nelson-Atkins museum will discuss the logistical and safety considerations required for this art installation that’s also an active “construction” site. The Kansas state archeologist will discuss the historic use and construction of this type of wall in the region and how they’re use has evolved.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the key differences between dry-stack stone and mortar set walls
  • Understand the process for selecting and placing stones within the wall assembly
  • Understand the planning, staging, and logistical aspects required within the immediate vicinity of dry-stack stone wall
  • Understand the historic uses of Dry-stack stone wall and how they’ve evolved for use in landscape design
