Committees
2008 AIA Kansas City Chapter Committees
AIA Kansas City has a wide variety of standing committees to address the interests, needs, and mission of the chapter, as well as to enhance public knowledge about architects and the built environment. Committees work in conjunction in order to advance the Strategic Goals of the Chapter.
Both members and non-members are invited to serve on our committees. If you see a committee that captures your interest, please send an email to tiffany@aiakc.org indicating the committee(s) on which you would like to participate.
AIA 150
In honor of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the American Institute of Architects, the organization is presenting the nation with a gift — the AIA150: Blueprint for America. The Blueprint for America is a nationwide, grassroots community service program that will empower citizens to share in creating new visions for their community’s design priorities.
Kansas City is made up of a sprawling array of urban, suburban, exurban, and transurban districts. Its components are no different from many cities across our country. As one navigates the city, there is a common struggle to understand the relevance of the places and people outside of one’s immediate neighborhoods and routines. A number of factors — political, economical, and technological — encourage communities within the city to turn further inward, and the city’s aspiration to develop a cohesive community is continuously challenged. In many ways, we are slowly forgetting who and what we are.
We, as a city, spend a great deal of time, money, and effort speculating on and planning the future direction of the metropolitan area. The Kansas City SNAPSHOT project is a yearlong experiment based on the simple idea that it is easier to effectively plan where our communities are going if we first take a thoughtful look at where we are.
Kansas City SNAPSHOT will engage the diverse people and places that inhabit the Johnson Drive/Van Brunt corridor, which forms a contiguous cross-section through the city. The project consists of a series of three public conversations hosted at venues along the “path” that will consider the way we live, how we interact with each other in the immediate built environment, and how that interaction shapes who we are as a city now and into the future. By documenting the Johnson Drive/Van Brunt corridor through compelling photography, stories, and community forums, the project is designed to inform, enlighten, inspire, and empower participants at multiple levels of involvement.
Kansas City SNAPSHOT is intended to help us see each other again.

Committee on the Environment (COTE)
The Committee on the Environment will strive to promote environmentally responsible "Green" design, building, and community planning practices through research, solution generation, and outreach to the profession, industry and the public. The committee will be conscious of what is being done at the National level and bring this expertise to the local chapter. COTE will lead and coordinate the profession’s involvement in environmental and energy-related issues and will promote the role of the architect in preserving and protecting our planet from environmental damage. The AIAKC Committee on the Environment meets every third Tuesday of each month at the office of the Kansas City Chapter of the AIA, from noon to 1 pm. Please feel free to join us on our next meeting.

Young Architects Forum (YAF)
YAF focuses its activities on the interests and needs of younger members (i.e., those who have been out of architecture school for ten years or less). YAF’s purpose is to encourage the participation of younger members in AIA Kansas City programs and activities, and to promote the architectural work of younger members. They will seize opportunities to become a prime force for the evolvement of the Chapter. This committee puts on an annual awards event, Monsters of Design, that continues to strengthen the collaboration of design among our allied organizations.

Each year, the committee will host a local reception in conjunction with the Programs Committee in honor of the newest fellow, and host a program designed to share the collective experience and wisdom of the Fellows with the younger members of the chapter.
Historic Preservation Committee
This committee will work with area organizations to take a proactive approach to preservation efforts in the metropolitan area. Each year, the committee will strive to present a lecture during preservation week; investigate, prepare and submit applications for grant opportunities regarding historic buildings; and educate the public, specifically potential clients (i.e. School Districts, Corporate entities, etc) on the benefits of historic preservation.
Tours Committee
This committee will strive to produce tours that will draw the interests of both AIA Kansas City members and the general public. These tours will increase awareness of the significant architectural works in Kansas City. The tours planned will be relevant to and/or coordinated with other AIA Kansas City activities and programs.
