May 29: Lunch & Learn: Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts: A peek under the hood

Get an up-close-and-personal update about Kansas City’s new performance venue from five actively involved principals in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.  You’ll get a brief overview about the facility that is now emerging from the ground at 16th and Broadway. Then delve into intriguing architectural, engineering and design details needed to ensure great acoustics, high-tech production capacity and a unique audience experience. Speakers will focus on the intricate system of “veins and arteries” that pump life into a performing arts center, including concrete and steel construction and heating and cooling approaches.  A 3-D “fly-through” will help you to envision the process of creating a performing arts center— one of the most complex types of structures to build.

With opening planned for the 2010-2011 performance season, the Kauffman Center will provide a state-of-the art performance venue for three resident companies: Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera and Kansas City Ballet.  The center will also present a diverse range of other performances including dance and music of all types, as well as smaller Broadway and off-Broadway touring productions.

A world-class team of architects, acousticians and theater planners have designed the Kauffman Center, which includes a 1600-seat concert hall and 1800-seat proscenium theater.  Audiences will enjoy excellent acoustics, state-of-the-art theater and lighting design, staging, and sightlines as well as comfortable ergonomic seating.

June 12: Integrated Project Delivery: Architects as Leaders?

Sign up now to explore the world of IPD and the Architect’s leadership role.

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a project delivery approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the talents and insights of all participants to reduce waste and optimize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction.

At the core of an integrated project are collaborative, integrated and productive teams composed of key project participants. Building upon early contributions of individual expertise, these teams are guided by principles of trust, transparent processes, effective collaboration, open information sharing, team success tied to project success, shared risk and reward, value-based decision making, and utilization of full technological capabilities and support. The outcome is the opportunity to design, build, and operate as efficiently as possible.
