Kiowa County Schools
Following the devastating tornado that destroyed their town, USD 422 chose a bold strategy to combine their schools into a single K-12 facility, yet with the desire to maintain discreet identity within the new facility for elementary, middle and high school functions. The resulting design is focused on a highly flexible sustainable approach* while constantly maintaining a student-centered focus.
The design reinforces the community’s master plan by placing the school’s front door along Main Street. The building is organized around a courtyard, which serves as gathering space for all ages. The north wing houses the high school, and gymnasiums. The south wing houses the lower school curriculums, zoned to identify their unique characteristics. The plan maximizes daylight (proven to have a positive impact on student performance) and natural ventilation. The school itself serves as an active teaching tool and has been integrated into the curriculum.
