The Curved House Exterior
The exterior of the Curved House is a showcase for a number of well crafted and appropriately sited objects. An entry gate marks the public / private threshold and is abstracted as two retilinear volumes wrapped with 2” square slats of Ipe when closed. The supporting frame is constructed from galvanized steel and Ipe battens.
A similar logic of construction is expressed when one transitions towards the house. Ipe screens provide privacy for those in the dining room and courtyard while unifying elements of the house through form and materiality. The elevated entrance bridge follows this rationale as well.
A partially sunken fire pit is effectively a piece of outdoor furniture. Ipe slats are mounted to a galvanized steel frame as they create a radiused cornered deck surface. A fine gravel base at one’s foot materially connects the fire pit to the adjacent rock garden and the house’s perimeter skirt.
