  • Architect: Populous; Craftsman: A. Zahner Company

  • Kansas City, Missouri

Briefly describe the project type, the program, and the design solution in 150 words or less.

Kauffman Stadium’s enhanced façade unifies and reinforces the sculptural form of the original building. The repetitive 1970’s colonnade is renewed with a contemporary twist, using vertical sawtooth-shaped stainless steel panels to recall the articulations beneath.

A pattern of perforations and dimples allows glimpses of the original structure and the emblazoned the Royals’ graphic adds visual delight. Daylight and air continually penetrate the façade, transforming its appearance as sunlight reflects off the panels throughout the day.

At night, repeated blue strokes of light accentuate the façade, complimenting the sculptural gesture of the original stadium. The metal panels and their subtle detail provide a contemporary statement for the renewed Kauffman Stadium.
