Oak Garage Signage
  • Architect: el dorado inc; Artist: Willoughby Design Group
  • Kansas City, Missouri

The project includes a new wayfinding system in an existing garage designed by others. Since it opened in 2003, users of the Oak Garage across from City Hall and the Jackson County Courthouse have had a difficult time navigating the facility due to a complex double helix crossover parking design. Users were not utilizing the previous wayfinding signage, and could not locate their cars upon returning to the garage. If searching for a car by foot, one would only be exposed to every other level, resulting in numerous false stolen car complaints.

In collaboration with a graphic designer, the architect developed a wayfinding system whereby each level can be identified through the use of “face and name” recognition. The signage design was the result of a careful research and analysis process that included studies in human perception, pattern recognition, and mnemonics. The diversity of individuals featured in the system reflects Kansas City’s diverse population.

The signage panels were custom printed upon pvc panels, covered by a clear, graffiti-resistant polycarbonate panel over the face of the printing. Stainless steel angle frames surround the panels. The entire assembly is mounted to the existing concrete block walls with vandal-resistant fasteners and spacers.
