The Bent Dogtrot
Traditional barn forms are iconic to rural Midwestern character. To expand an existing barn’s footprint, an approach heavily-influenced by the spirit of these timeless buildings was employed. Blending multiple materials, details and forms, a twin structure was created, doubling the total area. Inspired by the traditional dogtrot, a breezeway separates the buildings, and the new was rotated 90 degrees to frame picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. A traditional gable roof clad in Corten steel extends from each barn, intersecting to create a single overhead profile, and both are wrapped in rough cut oak siding with a pine tar finish to further unify the original and the new.
